Saturday 1 October 2011-Walk (Cirque de Navacelles) ***** hot and sunny
We woke up to our beautiful view over the canyon and made the most of it by having croissants and coffee sitting on the doorstep of the van in the sun :) Went for a little walk along the cliff together and it is truly the most dramatic place we have ever been. It,s the best place I’ve ever been! We walked back and packed up the van and drove down to the village of Navacelles. It is a very quiet place with only a couple of small restaurants but the natural beauty can’t be beaten. We went down to investigate the river viz and the beautiful waterfall. I was taking my favourite water shots and we were having a giggle at two middle aged French couples who saw us on the other side of the river (we had come over the Roman(?) bridge) and started wading across! The guy with the pony tail had long trousers on and rolled them up and the women were trying to carry all the picnic stuff – it was hilarious – they even had a dog swimming alongside them. The bit they were wading across was just up-stream from where the water drops off the biggest cliff! I nearly plunged off a smooth rock on the edge doing his usual timed shot! We walked through the village and back to the van to collect lunch then took it down to a flat rock right on the edge of the waterfall to eat and read for a while. Then off on the most amazing hike/rock scramble along the side of the gorge, sometimes dipping down to the river and the most beautiful green pool at one stage, and sometimes right up along the edge of the gorge. We had originally set out to find what looked like some kind of fortress built in with the rocks but didn’t think we were in the right place at all. On our way back from being right down by the river we started on a different path steeply upwards and hey presto there was our fortress! Mind you you had to nearly break your neck up the last bit to even be able to see it! We returned along the top path and back to the village. I had been a bit miffed earlier that you couldn’t access the bottom of such a beautiful waterfall so I decided to go through a fence to see if I could get there somehow and Mag went back to the van to make a cuppa to take back to our rock. After I had returned unscathed(!) we set out to have a look at the aqua duct but it was modern and empty which was a bit disappointing but it did take us round the horseshoe left when the river gave up its meander hundreds of years ago. We decided to drive back up to the top for another night and had only just commented that on this particular road you were only ever 5 seconds away from death because it is really bendy, sheer drops and no crash barriers, when we turned round another bend and saw a red warning triangle at the side of the road and there was a little black car down the gorge upside down. They were soooooo lucky to get out of that alive, they were all standing at the side of the road on their mobile phones waiting for the rescue people who we saw arrive later. He had to shunt backwards and forwards to get round the bends to even get to them!!! Spent the evening in our beautiful spot and I took sun set photos.
